AIB College of Business is unique in that it offers every student the opportunity to serve the community. Students have wonderful experiences working with non-profit organizations, applying what they are learning in the classroom to a “real-world” situation. Part of my job as the IACC AmeriCorps*VISTA in the Service Learning Center is to maintain relationships with AIB’s community partners so students can continue to have great experiences when completing their service learning projects. Preserving community partner relationships is done with site visits, and I have been busy calling on organizations this summer!
During the past couple of months I have visited several community partners, including the Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Iowa, the Blank Park Zoo, Orchard Place, and the Animal Rescue League. These visits have been very informational, for both the Service Learning Center and the community partner.
Visiting with the community partners is a great chance to discuss service learning opportunities for AIB students. My visits have taught me that the options are endless for service learning! Our community partners have projects ranging from tutoring a child after school or creating marketing material for a non-profit organization, to planning a fundraising event or teaching basic computer skills. No matter a student’s talents or interests, there is a community partner out there for everyone!
The Service Learning Center looks forward to working with you, making the connections between your skills and real community needs!
We exist temporarily through what we take, but we live forever through what we give.
