SGA Kansas City Trip

By Brian Maruska

This last weekend the Student Government Association at AIB hosted a weekend getaway. Twenty-five others and I went on a road trip to Kansas City, MO, to visit Worlds and Oceans of Fun.

We left school bright and early Saturday morning at 6 a.m. The vibe was good because it was obvious that everyone was ready for a good time. Most people slept on the ride down simply because it was way too early for anything else. We ended up watching the movie Grandmas Boy to pass the time and get some laughs on the ride.

When we arrived I was instantly terrified to be honest. I have never before that day rode a roller coaster and needless to say… I wasn’t ready. My roommate, Bryant Blay and president of SGA, made me promise that I would ride the Patriot with him. I said why not?I was nervous until I overheard the operator announce that we will be going up to speeds of 75 miles per hour and over 200 feet… This to me was ridiculous. We are in line and it’s my turn to jump on the ride. I am simply scared out of my mind.

All strapped in and feeling halfway secure the ride starts. By the end of the sheer speed and upside down turns I have lost my voice and needless to say hooked on roller coasters!

We spent the rest of the day with a BBQ buffet lunch and relaxing. We visited Oceans of Fun right next door to cool off for about three hours which was very nice considering the heat. All in all, Oceans of Fun was the relaxing side of the trip.

As it started to cool off for the night, we once again visited Worlds of Fun. Throughout the day we rode The Mamba, Patriot, Prowler, and Boomerang -- all of which were awesome and experiences in themselves.

We finally got back to AIB around 1:30 p.m. It then hit everyone that we needed to get back to our school lives and buckle down to get some homework done.

All in all, SGA sponsored a great trip and we all had a great time. One that I will definitely look back on in the future and say, “That was a highlight of my college experience!”
